With a capacity to make 1,400 bricks in one hour out of fly ash, the fly ash bricks manufacturing unit at Koraput by Mission Shakti could soon be one of the best alternatives to the huge market dedicated to bricks made out of soil, Sita Kumari, district coordinator of Mission Shakti said on Thursday. With a mission to provide sustainable livelihood to women especially in the SHGs in the district, special initiative were brought forward by launching such units where SHGs take over the entire operation after receiving initial financial support and technical assistance from the district administration.
The infrastructure was established by spending Rs.41.84 lakhs another Rs.5.3 lakh would be shared with Shivani SHG of Padmapur of Koraput block as running cost of the unit.
The SHGs, under the guidance of Mission Shakti would be engaged in activities like procuring fly ash from Nalco at Damanjodi, making bricks and marketing the produce in the market.
However with an ever increasing demand for the bricks, the SHGs will not find it difficult to carry on with the business, she said.
Within the last few days, already there were orders pouring in for supply of bricks more than the plant’s capacity from construction sites managed by the government offices in the district like SSA, ITDA, RWSS etc. Once the quality testing of the bricks was done in the laboratory, more smiles could be generated in the SHGs earning more profits, she added.
