Paradip: Five anti-POSCO activists were arrested as tension gripped the proposed project site of the South Korean steel major near here on Tuesday, police said. The arrests came on the heels of the arrest on Sunday of POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samiti president Abhaya Sahoo, who has been sent to Choudwar jail on judicial remand for 14 days.

Angry over Sahu’s arrest, villagers opposing the project blocked roads connecting the proposed site by placing huge logs and other obstructions and even digging up roads at some places, police said. PPSS activists prevented outsiders from entering Dhinkia village, considered to be the epicentre of the anti-POSCO agitation, as a large number of project opponents guarded the entry points round-the-clock, they said.

Additional police force was deployed to prevent any untoward incident in view of the tension in the area.

The five were activists of PPSS and after their arrest they were produced before a local court at Kujanga which remanded them to judicial custody, additional superintendent of police Kumarmani Meher said. One of the arrested Prakash Jena, who was allegedly involved in an attack on a Congress leader and former sarpanch of Govindpur Nata Khatua last year, police said. - PTI
