Two cultural events -- ‘Vande Mataram’, a patriotic song and dance show and ‘Kavi Gopal Krushna Smruti Sandhya’ a programme to remember the great Odishi poet were held in the city on Sunday evening.
The patriotic cultural show ‘Vande Mataram' was organised by ‘Abhinaya Jagat’, a magazine devoted to amateur theatre and other stage activities, at Kavisurya Rangamanch auditorium. The function was scheduled to be held on Saturday evening but had to be deferred by one day due to rain.
The ‘Kavi Gopal Krushna Smruti Sandhya’ was organised by Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademy and Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odishi Gavesana Kendra at Herambalaya College auditorium. This was a tribute to the great poet of nineteenth century who was born in undivided Ganjam district.
Three persons were honoured during the ‘Vande Mataram’ programme. They included Vijay Kumar Das, the young film maker whose short film ‘Jana Gana Mana’ won the best film award at 'COFFI - Short Films Contest 2012, Mumbai'. The others were a young multifarious talent Simran Sarangi and educationist Pratap Chandra Patra.
Students and members of various cultural organisations of the city like Bhanja Kala Parishad, Ganjam Kala Parishad, Guru Kelucharan Kala Tirtha, Nrutyam Dance Acedemy, Anwesha Kala Kendra, Odishi Nrutyayana, and Berhampur Kala Niketan performed group dances and ballets on patriotic themes.
At the ‘Kavi Gopal Krushna Smruti Sandhya’, the highlight was a cultural programme of Odishi music and dance recitals based on lyrics of Gopla Krushna.
