PUDUCHERRY: Sleuths from the Excise Department on Thursday seized more than 5,000 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor from a fake bottling unit at Kombakkam near Mudliarpet here.

Deputy Commissioner (Excise) R. Anbajagane told The Hindu that two persons involved in the manufacture of the bottles escaped. However, those involved in running the unit had been identified and a massive hunt launched to arrest them.

The raid was conducted at a mango grove following a tip-off. The bottles were kept packed in separate boxes for transporting them to the neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Anbajagane said, adding that the bottles had the imprint of a popular brand of rum and brandy sold in Tamil Nadu.

Besides seizing the consignment worth around Rs. 3 lakh, the team recovered the equipment used to bottle the liquor, a two-wheeler, labels, 20 empty cans, caramel and essence, Mr. Anbajagane said.

Investigation revealed that the mango grove belonged to a person who had settled in France.

The family had posted a watchman to look after the property.

He was absconding.
