It is the highest amount earned as

fine during

elections

PUDUCHERRY: Excise Department has identified 61 cases of violations and collected a total fine of Rs.12.40 lakh during checks conducted during the election period.

24-hour check posts

According to a press release, the department had started to check on violations from March 7 to May 18 and had set up 24-hour check posts in the bordering areas of Puducherry including at Kanagachettikulam, Gorimedu, Madagadipet, Thirukannur, Sedarapet and Maducarai. Vehicles were checked for carrying banned commodities and liquor at the check posts, the release added.

Seven cases filed

Following this, the department has filed seven cases in the court which included violations such as attempt to smuggle fake liquor, sale and smuggling of liquor varieties against the Excise rules.

The department levied fine in 54 cases including illegally storing liquor for sale and sale of liquor after the permitted time.

Two autorickshaws and six four-wheelers had been seized in these cases.

The department also seized liquor worth around Rs.15 lakh during this period.

From March to May, the department collected a total fine amount of Rs.12.40 lakh from the violators.

The department said this was the highest amount collected as fine when compared to previous election periods, the release said.
