A local court has set aside the election of a ward member of Baro Gram Panchayat in Odisha’s Kendrapara district on polygamy charge.
Ananta Kumar Swain was elected as the ward member from ward No— 14 from Baro Gram Panchayat two years ago by defeating Prafulla Kumar Rout. At the time of filing of nomination paper, Prafulla opposed the nomination paper of Ananta Swain before the election officer and demanded the rejection of his nomination paper as he has two wives. But the election officer rejected the plea of Prafulla and the nomination paper of Ananta Kumar Swain was declared valid.
The defeated candidate filed a case in the civil court against the elected ward member and alleged that as per section— 11 of Odisha Gram Panchayat Act a person having more than two children or married to more than one wife is not entitled to contest in the Panchayat election.
