I have gone through a news item that the price of sugar and cloth may go up as the State government has decided to impose VAT of 4 per cent on these commodities from April, 2012.
Since sugar is an essential commodity for everyone in society, there should not be any tax on it.
The government, which is providing housing facilities to those who are below the poverty line through different schemes, should ensure provision of food to these sections at a cheaper rate.
So the government should not impose any tax on food items.

Cost of houses
In item published in the Reporters' Diary column last week revealed the real cause of comparatively high cost of houses built by the government agencies than their private counterparts. It was stated in the item that the Orissa State Housing Board (OSHB) has more than 500 unskilled employees whose salaries are collected from prospective buyers which is the real cause of escalation of prices of houses built by the OSHB. As a matter of fact, people are keen on purchasing houses from the OSHB at lower prices thinking that it is free from encumbrances. But surprisingly the houses sold by OSHB are costlier than private buildings.
