The husband of Kolkata’s Deputy Mayor Farzana Alam was killed in a road accident, police said on Thursday.

The body of Abdul Momin (55) was recovered from the Katakol area of the city that falls under the Kolkata Leather Complex police station, said the Mayor of the city’s municipal corporation, Sovan Chatterjee.

“It is a very unfortunate incident. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the residence of the Deputy Mayor and offered her condolences,” Mr Chatterjee said.  Family members of the victim said that Mr Momin could not be contacted after he left his residence on Wednesday evening.

A missing person complaint was registered with the police and his body was later identified at a crematorium in the city.

According to police, a lorry hit Mr Momin, who was riding a motorbike, on Wednesday evening. 

The vehicle that hit the motorbike has not been identified so far.

Mr. Momin, an advocate at the Calcutta High Court, was also a member of the minority cell of the Trinamool Congress.

Ms. Alam is a three-time Councillor and has been elected from Ward No. 28 in the Rajabajar area of the city.
