Though defeated in the recent West Bengal Assembly by-election, Minister of State for Animal Resources Development Humayun Kabir claimed here on Friday that he had been asked by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to continue in office.

Mr. Kabir lost the by-election from the Rejinagar Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district.

“She has asked me continue with my responsibility as a Minister and also work for the party,” he told journalists after meeting Ms. Banerjee at the Secretariat earlier in the day.

Mr. Kabir, a former Congress MLA, joined Trinamool Congress and was inducted into the Council of Ministers in November 2012. He had won the Rejinagar seat as a Congress candidate in the 2011 Assembly polls, but managed to come only third in the by-election.

Before meeting Ms. Banerjee, the Minister said the Trinamool unit in the district did not help him out to the required extent in the campaign. He alleged that the Congress won because it invested a lot of money.
