The Orissa Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on Tuesday asked the Cuttack chief district medical officer (CDMO) to conduct an enquiry and submit a “factual report” on the allegations of the death of a newborn in a Cuttack-based government hospital.

Taking note of the case following a petition filed before it by an advocate, the Chairman and the Judicial Member of the Commission have asked the CDMO to submit the report in four weeks.

Advocate Subrat Kumar Mohapatra in his petition had alleged that due to sheer “negligence” by doctors of the premier City Hospital, a newborn baby died here on June 26 this year. Annexing some newspaper reports, Mohapatra in his petition had alleged that the CDMO had not taken any action against the erring doctors. Besides issuing notice to the CDMO, the Commission has also called upon the petitioner to submit any document or material in support of his allegations.

The Commission felt any material evidence in the case would facilitate enquiry by the Commission.

The case would come up for further hearing on September 20, informed the petitioner advocate Mohaptra.
