Curfew relaxed at 6 a.m., would be

re-imposed at 8 p.m.

Allahabad: Curfew in three of the six affected police station areas of the city was lifted on Wednesday following improvement in the situation after violence last week over alleged desecration of a holy book inside a place of worship. Officials said curfew was lifted from Kotwali and Atarsuiya police station areas as also Rajrooppur outpost of Dhoomanganj police station at 6 am following improvement in the scene in the past three days.

In Kareli, Shahganj and Khuldabad, curfew was relaxed at 6 am and would be re-imposed at 8 pm, the officials said. Educational institutions across the city, which had been ordered closed by the district administration since Saturday as a precautionary measure, reopened this morning.

There has been a heavy deployment of Rapid Action Force, Provincial Armed Constabulary and local police personnel to prevent any trouble in the six police station areas of the old city, where curfew had been imposed after police was attacked by a mob agitated over the alleged desecration of its holy book last Friday.

Some people lodged a complaint at the Kareli police station and went away after an assurance but a few minutes later, a mob collected outside the police station, throwing stones and damaging vehicles.

At least 10 policemen, including two sub-inspectors, were injured in the attack. PTI
