PUDUCHERRY: Alongside the ongoing beach beautification project, a crafts bazaar along the lines of the Dilli Haat is also coming up. Work has already begun at the passage between Rue Mahe de Labourdonnais and Rue Ananda Rangapoulle perpendicular to Gandhi Thidal, between Beach Road and Bharathi Park, where this bazaar will come up.
According to the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), which has designed this project, space for around 58 stall spaces, each 4 m by 4 m in size, is due to come up. These stalls will house temporary craft exhibitions and melas. Public toilets will also be built at both wings of the bazaar, on either side of Gandhi Thidal.
As part of the project, Bharathi Park will be connected to Beach Road via Gandhi Thidal, which will be converted to a plaza with granite flooring.
Following Bharathi Park, which has been ‘pedestrianised,' the plaza and crafts bazaar will also be an area only for pedestrians. Benches will be put up at the plaza.
Provisions will also be made for a temporary stage at the plaza for performances.
Work on the plaza and bazaar is expected to be completed in the next few months by the Public Works Department, said officials of INTACH.
