The city unit of CPI (M) staged a demonstration in front of the office of Berhampur Sub-Collector on Thursday in support of its charter of demands. The protesters were led by party unit secretary Basant Nanda.

The protesters said that the demonstration was aimed at drawing the attention of the government to the issues pertaining to economically backward families living in the urban areas of the State. The party urged the government to provide Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards to all poor families. It also sought ration cards to all families, irrespective of their economic status. “We want all families to be provided with 35 kg rice or wheat for Rs. 2 a kg through the Public Distribution System,” Mr. Nanda said.
