BERHAMPUR: A harsh reality in the form of power cuts has got added to the Durga puja festivities in south Orissa.

Unlike other parts of Orissa, the areas of south Orissa, which are under the power distribution company, Southco have started to experience power cuts due to load shedding. As per the announcements made by the Southco authorities, areas of the city would have to face two hours of power cut due to load shedding between morning and evening. There has been no announcement regarding till when this power cut would continue.

There has also not been any proper announcement about at time the power cuts would occur in an area. At present the citizens of the city are facing power cuts of one hour each during morning and afternoon. But most of them are facing problems due to ignorance about the timing of power cut. The Southco is yet to have any telephone number to provide necessary data to the consumers.

Former general secretary of the Ganjam Bar Association Manoj Patnaik said the Southco should provide clear data regarding power cuts to consumers. “They should at least provide a telephone number through which one could at least get data about the time when a particular area would have power cut,” he said.

According to Southco authorities they were compelled to impose power cut as they were not getting ample power supply from the Orissa Power Transmission Corporation Limited. According to them the need of Southco was around 50 MW but they were getting around 35 MW during peak hours.
