Detailed discussion with consultants to be held soon
PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry Municipality will soon engage a consultant to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) on the road works to be carried out under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
In March 2007, the municipality had sent a proposal for road improvement works under the JNNURM. But the proposal was returned owing to lack of adequate details in terms of surveys and studies for the works, an official said.
“We had sent a proposal for improving 15 roads in various regions under the municipal limits at the cost of Rs. 15 crore. It was sent back and we were asked to revise it after conducting traffic surveys, environment impact studies and detailed geographical surveys,” he said.
Accordingly, a list of consultants to carry out the works was sent to the local body. Three consultants had expressed their willingness to prepare the report, he said.
“In the Corporations in Tamil Nadu and all over the country, such works are taken up by consultants. But we had prepared our proposal. A detailed discussion with the consultants will be held soon. We will also look into their previous experience for selection,” he said.
Once the consultant is selected, the works for a detailed project report would begin, which would have a timeframe of one to one-and-a-half month.
“We can also use these surveys for our future projects,” he added.
In this first phase, the municipality had proposed to take up 15 road works measuring 17.2 km. With escalating costs over the last year, a revision of estimates from Rs. 15 crore to Rs. 25 crore would be required, official sources said.
In addition to revision of estimate, the municipality would also take into consideration the present condition of the roads, as the Public Works Department had laid one or two roads listed in the proposal during this one-year period.
