Union seeks monthly relief of Rs. 1,000 for workers

Pondicherry: A meeting of the Union of Pondicherry State Construction Workers (affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions) held here recently called upon the Administration to provide a monthly assistance of Rs. 1000 for the workers as had been paid to handloom weavers and fishermen.

A resolution adopted at the meeting said that there were around 50,000 construction and building workers spread over different regions in the Union Territory. They were not getting work round the month and with construction activity itself being exposed to several changes, the plight of the workers was most pitiable. Hence they should be paid the monthly allowance.

The other demands were an ex-gratia of Rs. 1 lakh to the bereaved family of the worker in an accident, a Provident Fund scheme with contributions from the Government, availability of 30 kg. of rice free of cost for at least three months in a year as rainy seasons would deprive the workers of job opportunities. Free house site pattas to the workers and a housing subsidy at Rs. 1 lakh should also be available to them to raise houses on the site.
