The Baitarani Bachao Abhijan (BBA) here on Friday claimed that Essar Steel Limited had dismantled intake well, which was alleged to have been constructed in Baitarani River in contravention of environmental norms.

BBA leaders Murali Manohar Sharma and Sarbeswar Mishra had challenged the construction of intake well in Baitarani River by Essar Steel Limited in National Green Tribunal.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Sharma alleged, “we had urged NGT for an inspection of place where intake well was constructed. Sensing that a spot visit was imminent, the company had dismantled the intake well clandestinely and erected fence around the place. However, we have managed to reach the spot and capture sight of dismantling.” BBA leaders claimed they had visited the site of intake well on Thursday.

“Dismantling of intake well by the company in the River Baitarani is not only designed to wipe out the proof of its illegal construction, but also is a deliberate attempt to derail the nation’s highest environmental jurisprudence,” the BBA leaders charged.

They further alleged, “the illegality resorted to by ESSAR Steel Limited should be condemned. The State government should take action against the company.”

“The intake well in Baitarani River would have seriously hampered agricultural prospects in the periphery and downstream. Unless water to industries from rivers is stopped, agriculture is bound to suffer in the State. Therefore, the Baitarani Banchao Abhijan has been opposing loot the Baitarani water by industries,” said Mr. Mishra.

The BBA leaders said they would bring reported dismantling of intake well by the company to the notice of NGT.
