With the bidding process for selection of developer for Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) at Bedabahal in Odisha’s Sundargarh district likely to commence shortly, the Union Ministry of Power asked the State government to complete the land acquisition process.

Subsequent to the Power Ministry’s request, Revenue and Disaster Management department has been urged to complete the process immediately.

Request to officials

Energy Secretary P. K. Jena in a letter addressed to Additional Chief Secretary Taradatt urged the officers concerned to take up the work of alienation of government land measuring 512.42 acres, including forestland, and issuance of notice under Section-12 for private land under Land Acquisition Act, 1894 for UMPP at Bedabahal on priority.

As per revised standard document of bidding document, Union Power Ministry emphasized on three requirements -- issuance of notice under Section-12 of LA Act for private land, alienation of government land measuring 512.42 acres and diversion of forestland of 68.88 acres.

Fast-track process

Union Energy Secretary Pradeep K Sinha recently wrote to the State government saying, “the proposal for alienation of government land measuring 512.42 acres required for UMPP was submitted through the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) in 2010 which is still under consideration with district administration at Sundargarh.”

When contacted, Sundargarh Sub Collector Anam Charan Patra, who is in charge of land acquisition for UMPP, said, “we have already fast-tracked the acquisition process. The process of alienation of government land had already crossed several hurdles. The process will be completed within one month.”
