SHIMLA: Several areas in Himachal Pradesh experienced the season’s coldest day so far on Thursday after heavy rain over the past 48 hours.

There are reports of more than 300 mm rainfall at several places in the State. Shimla had 200 mm of rainfall by evening and the temperature fell to 16 degrees Celsius. It was much lower in Kullu-Manali and the tribal districts.

Schools and other institutions remained closed in many areas including the tribal belt of Kinnaur and Lahaul Spiti where it has been snowing for the past two days. It has become impossible for students to reach school because of landslips and overflowing streams. The maximum temperature in the State ranged from 6 to 10 degrees below the normal.

Electricity and water supply was disrupted as was cable TV service. Hundreds of vehicles carrying apple cartons are stranded on the roads.
