‘To make on-the-spot assessment of the devastation'

State seeks Rs 150 crore for rehabilitation

93 persons killed, 250 villages affected

Patna: A Central team will undertake a visit of the tornado-hit five districts, Araria, Purnia, Kishanganj, Katihar and Supaul, in Bihar's Seemanchal belt to make an on-the-spot assessment of the devastation caused last month, State Disaster Management Department Principal Secretary Vyas Ji said on Monday.

“We have received information about the visit of the team for making a spot assessment of the magnitude of damage caused by the tornado in these districts last month,” Mr. Vyas Ji said.

Meanwhile, the State Disaster Management has submitted a report to the Centre seeking a package of Rs 150 crore for rehabilitation and other necessary help to over two lakh people affected by the disaster, he said.

Mr. Vyas Ji said altogether 93 persons lost their lives and more than 250 villages were affected by the tornado.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 1.5 lakh to the dependents of each of those who were killed in the tornado, besides other help on the pattern of the one being received by the people in cases of floods and drought. -- PTI
