JAIPUR: Rajasthan Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Bharat Singh on Tuesday called for a strict monitoring of the sources of income for panchayat institutions to make them financially viable and strong.

Addressing a workshop of Panchayati Raj functionaries here, Mr. Singh said new income sources such as share in the mining royalty and fee on the pasture land could be generated for panchayat bodies. The Chief Executive Officers should constantly monitor all such sources, he added.

Zila Pramukhs, Deputy Zila Pramukhs and CEOs of Panchayati Raj institutions from 17 districts of the State attended the three-day workshop. Mr. Singh said since the main objective of panchayats was ensuring rural development, their activities should concentrate on this sole task. He said the State Government was committed to handing over important spheres of administration to the panchayat bodies to make them powerful.

According to an official release here, the participants praised the State Government's decisions to appoint third grade teachers through Zila Parishads, allocate additional funds for drinking water supply and launching of a special scheme for supplying wheat to the below poverty line families.
