PUDUCHERRY: Various aspects of the recently-tabled Union Budget 2010-2011 were analysed during a discussion organised by the Department of Economics of Pondicherry University on Thursday.
Professor and Head, Department of Economics of the university M. Ramadass explained the features of the budget.
He observed that the budget should have given more focus on aspects such as agriculture growth, development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises sector and price rise, according to a press release.
He called for improvement in the structure of delivery mechanism and institutional arrangements such as civil service to achieve greater percolation effect of budgetary policies.
Professor Ramadass said that the budget suggestions submitted by the department during the pre-budget discussion such as stepping up of National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme, food security programme, waiver of educational loan, subsidy for agricultural growth and infrastructural investment have been focussed on in the budget, the release added.
S. Aravanan, Selection Grade Lecturer, Department of Commerce of the university spoke on the negative aspects of the budget. Balamurugan from the Income Tax Department answered questions on the income tax proposal.
Assistant Commissioner of Excise Department Rajagopalan and Organiser of the discussion and Reader in Economics P. Muthaiyan spoke.
