`Party to back any Bill that gives reservation to poor'

DEHRA DUN: Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati on Tuesday called upon the party cadres to fan out to remote areas of Uttaranchal and tell the people that the party was equally concerned about the poor of all castes and religions so that a better show could be put up during the next elections.

Addressing presspersons here, Ms. Mayawati said that her party would contest the next State Assembly elections in Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab on its own. "BSP will prove to be the balancing factor in Uttaranchal and we will support any party to form the Government if it meant working for the uplift of the poor." The BSP will support any Bill that gave reservation to the poor if tabled in Parliament, she said.

Accusing the Congress Government in Uttaranchal of not initiating any programme to improve the lot of the poor, Ms. Mayawati said that the BSP if voted to power would try to implement programmes that provided an opportunity to every person to earn a decent livelihood. "You don't need big industries but a vast chain of cottage enterprises to develop a region," she said.
