BHUBANESWAR: Orissa became the 9th State in the country where female condoms were distributed to empower women to reduce higher risk of transmissibility of HIV.

Under a joint programme taken up by Orissa State AIDS Control Society (OSACS), the Hindustan Latex Family Planning, OXFAM and European Commission, female condoms were distributed to sex workers at Mali Sahi here on Friday. Inaugurating the function, OSACS Project Director Raj Kishore Choudhury said 80 per cent of women between the age of 15 and 39 were afflicted by HIV/AIDS and the product would empower themselves to take control of their lives. It would be made available to women (mostly sex workers) through social marketing.
