Bhopal: While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) scored a thumping victory in the first phase of the civic bodies’ elections in Madhya Pradesh, it witnessed a rude shock in the Sagar district of the Bundelkhand region where Kamla Bai, a eunuch, defeated its candidate Suman Ahirwar by a huge margin of 43,433 votes for the post of mayor.

Kamla, also known as Kamla Bua, contested as an Independent and garnered 64,683 votes to emerge victorious for the Sagar Municipal Corporation. The BJP candidate got 21,250 votes while the Congress candidate, Rekha Chaudhary, could manage only 11,799 votes leading to her security deposit being forfeited.

For the BJP, which has held the mayoral post in Sagar for the last 10 years, this has been a major disappointment.

The results for the first phase of polling were announced here Tuesday evening. The BJP bagged 7 out of the 12 city municipal corporation seats, including Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior and Jabalpur. Krishna Gaur, daughter-in-law of Minister for Gas Relief and civic administration Babulal Gaur, won from Bhopal for the post of mayor. The Congress won from Katni and Dewas, while the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won from Satna and Singrauli.

The results for the second-phase polls will be announced on Thursday.
