BJP activists disrupt road, rail traffic
BJP suspects the role of a police officer
Jamshedpur (Jharkhand): A BJP leader was gunned down at Chakradharpur on Monday morning prompting the authorities to clamp prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC in the sub-divisional town in West Singhbhum district.
Chakradharpur SDPO Jagjivan Suman said district president of BJP’s jhuggi-jhopri cell, Pradip Sao, died when a group of men hurled bombs on his vehicle and fired at him near a railway level crossing on the busy Chakradharpur-Ranchi road.
The prohibitory orders would remain in force till May 5 in view of the prevailing tension in the town, Suman said adding Superintendent of Police Sudhir Kumar Jha was camping in the town to monitor the law and order situation.
BJP activists put up a blockade on the level crossing demanding arrest of the killers of Sao (45), who was also a railway contractor. Road and rail traffic were disrupted by the blockade.
BJP district president Ashok Sarangi told PTI that the party suspected the role of a police officer in the killing of Sao, who had returned from Kolkata early in the morning after attending a marriage ceremony. He said two persons including Sao’s driver were also injured in the attack.
Meanwhile, train services in the Chakradharpur-Tatanagar section were affected following the incident.
Railway sources said while a goods train was stranded at the railway level crossing, long distance trains like Ahmedabad-Howrah Express and Allepey-Tata Express were detained at Chakradharpur.
BJP has called for a dawn-to-dusk bandh in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand tomorrow in protest against the killing.
West Singhbhum district president of BJP Ashok Sarangi said the bandh was called to pressurise for immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the killing and also for removal of the sub-divisional police officer of Chakradharpur.
Meanwhile, former Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda who reached the spot following the incident also demanded an impartial inquiry into the killing.
