Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders of Ganjam district alleged that irregularities had occurred during the distribution of relief in the natural calamity-hit district.

Speaking to newsmen in the city on Tuesday, BJP leaders, including district unit president Bijay Kumar Swain and former State BJP Yuva Morcha president, Bibhuti Jena, alleged that the Village Relief Committees (VRC) formed for smooth distribution of relief materials were just an eye wash. As per them although the district administration had ordered for formation of VRCs in every panchayat of the district, in most panchayats the VRCs were constituted only for namesake. As per the BJP, in 70 per cent of the panchayats, the VRCs had not been formed as per the norms.

“We found that at several villages the relief materials were distributed as per the whim of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leaders especially the MLAs of ruling party. For example in Narayanpur panchayat of Rangeilunda block in Golapur assembly segment, the local BJD MLA instigated the supporters of the ruling party to procure relief materials without any proper documents.” alleged Mr. Jena.

Several families have been excluded from the list of beneficiaries to get relief for political reasons, they added. Apart from it, there was allegation that each bag of 50 kg of rice provided as relief to families contained around 40 kg of rice.

While it had been declared that each family would get four litres of kerosene as relief, in reality in most places families got one and half litres of kerosene.

In several panchayats, the sarpanchs who have links with the ruling party did not distribute the relief rice and stocked it, they alleged. These sarpanchs were compelled to distribute the rice only when their illegal hoarding of relief material came to the fore, they said. Such irregularities were happened at Mendharajpur of Sasanpadar panchayat and Kirtipurt, Kanisi of keluapalli panchayat, they said.

Large scale misappropriation had occurred in the name of use of vehicles to evacuate people before the onset of the cyclonic storm and provision of cooked food to these evacuated persons, the BJP leaders alleged.

According to them the food materials meant for the evacuated persons had been illegally sold in market by some unscrupulous elements.

They demanded strict legal action against these persons. The BJP leaders also protested arrest of some of their activists who had led demonstrations of people who had failed to get relief materials.
