The head of a cow was found in front of the Jagannath temple at the block headquarters town Bisra, about 25 km from here, triggering a shutdown in the area on Saturday.
Police said local people came across a polythene bag and found the severed head inside near the temple entrance on Friday.
Shops and business establishments downed their shutters and buses plying through the town remained off the road in protest, police said.
Elaborate security arrangement had been made in the entire town with intensified patrolling while prominent citizens of all communities condemned the act of mischief and appealed to people to maintain peace and harmony.
Local VHP leaders demanded a thorough probe, ban on cow slaughter in and around Bisra town and arrest of the mischief—makers immediately. PTI
