West Bengal has been named second among 20 States in a ranking of the country’s power distribution companies.

The first integrated rating of power discoms has given the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) ‘A’ rating for its high operational and financial performance.

The rating exercise was coordinated by the Power Finance Corporation under the aegis of the Union Power Ministry and was executed by ICRA and CARE.The State discom caters to over one crore customers, electrifying remote islands in the Sundarbans like Gosaba and Sagar.

The company’s officials said that since its formation in 2007 it has been undertaking various reforms in the distribution sector. These were aimed mainly at improving the power quality.

Aside from distribution, the company also plays a leading role in the State’s hydro power development. Till December 2012, altogether 1078.8 MW hydro power had been harnessed in the State. This included conventional hydro projects and pumped storage projects.
