BHUBANESWAR: Much to the cheer of the litterateurs' community, celebrated fiction writer Ramachandra Behera has been appointed as the new president of Orissa Sahitya Akademi, State's apex body for literature, for two years.
The Department of Culture made the announcement late on Thursday following approval of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
Born in Barhatipura village near Ghatagaon in tribal district of Keonjhar, Mr.Behera, now 65, studied English literature at the prestigious Benaras Hindu University.
He commenced his career as a college teacher in 1969 and spent most of his years at Kendrapada College till his retirement as a college principal a few years ago.
Behera has been the recipient of several prestigious awards and hours for his outstanding contribution to Oriya literature.
The list includes Sahitya Akademi Awards from the Centre and the State; Katha Samman, Sarala Samman, Utkal Sahitya Samman and Tarini Samman.
His popular published works include Pada Talara Mati, Aeithi Akasha, Duara Tapile Bata, Chinha Achinha, Abhinayara Paridhi, Muktira Ruparekha and Dhusara Suryastha.
“The appointment is a responsibility to serve one of the premiere institutions of the State. I shall do my best to uphold the dignity of the chair,” he stated on being asked for his reaction.
