Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, who heads the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP coalition Government in the State, on Wednesday ruled out imposition of fresh taxes, as suggested by the BJP.

“Our Government will not put additional burden on the people of the State in the garb of raising additional resources,” Mr. Badal told reporters here.

The Chief Minister said his Government was planning to waive off the stamp duty completely. In the first budget of the Government this year, Finance Minister Manpreet Singh, who is also nephew of Mr. Badal, had announced reduction of stamp duty from six to five per cent.

Earlier in the day, senior BJP leader and Local Bodies Minister Manoranjan Kalia had hinted rationalisation of existing taxes and exploration of new areas for revenue collection.

The Chief Minister said the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had assured the State Government to set up a stadium of international-status at Bathinda. “The State Government had already allotted 52 acres of land for the purpose to the sports department,” he said.

Mr. Badal said his Government was making concerted efforts to set up a Defence university in Punjab.

“The issue is being taken at all appropriate forums,” he added. PTI
