The issue of atrocities against women is a deep-seated problem in society that had been accumulating all these days and has found a sudden release, said Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee here on Friday.

“This problem did not emerge all of a sudden. This problem was aggregating within our society due to lack of education, the wrong kind of education and a breakdown of social values. All of these were collecting below the surface, suddenly all this filth is emerging in one stroke,” Mr. Bhattacharjee said, adding that the gang-rape of a 23-year-old in a bus in Delhi was a matter of shame and grief everywhere in the country.

Mr. Bhattacharjee, who is the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, also said that the Trinamool Congress government’s attitude “that this is a problem of women in Delhi and does not happen in Kolkata” was unacceptable. The time had come for society to be alert and the “negligence” that has set in cannot go on, he said.

“There is a need for all of us to be far more responsible. There is a need for greater sensitivity,” he said, adding that it must reflect in “our attitude, thinking and language.”

He also said that the police need to be more alert and the fast track courts must not merely be announced but also function. “Unless as a nation we come together and address this issue, the youth will never forgive us,” he added.

Speaking at a function to observe the foundation day of the CPI (M)’s official organ Ganashakti , Mr. Bhattacharjee also spoke about the problems being faced by the media in the State, particularly those newspapers and television channels that are controlled by the owners of chit funds.

Mr. Bhattacharjee said the Trinamool Congress government not only had a poor record of suppressing freedom of expression by taking action against voices of dissent, as well as targeting journalists, it also discriminates against dailies and news channels that do not subscribe to the Ms. Banerjee’s point of view by withholding government ads.

“The situation has been further complicated by the influence of these chit funds. Where did these chit funds come from? Not only are they a threat to a free and fair media, but they have also adversely affected small savings,” he said.

Mr. Bhattacharjee said that when the Left Front was in power a Bill had been brought against the operation of these rogue groups, but it required the assent of the President and has been lying there in waiting for a long time.
