Olandai Keerapalayam residents have their cup of woes overflowing
PUDUCHERRY: Residents of Olandai Keerapalayam have been suffering due to mosquito menace for a long time now. A canal, which runs along Olandai Keerapalayam, has turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes owing to irregular cleaning and fogging measures.
Garbage is being dumped into the canal which has affected the flow and increased the woes of the residents of nearby areas.
“Municipal workers clean the canal once in three or four months. But, mosquito density is high. Many of our family members were down with fever and chikungunya recently. Even repellents helped little in keeping away mosquitoes,” said Kanmani, a resident of Viduthalai Nagar in Olandai Keerapalayam.
Mosquito menace is almost a perennial thing in these residential areas. “Rain or shine, the menace is acute here. It is difficult to sleep peacefully at night. Municipal authorities should regularly desilt the canal,” a resident of Bharathidasan Nagar said.
According to Nagarajan, who runs a two-wheeler automobile workshop at Bharathidasan Nagar, work gets affected in the evening hours due to mosquito menace. “We are unable to stand here and work after 6 p.m. The canal has to be regularly desilted and fogging measures undertaken,” he said.
Though waste water flows into the canal throughout the year, dumping of garbage has choked it at various places. At several spots, the walls of the canal are damaged and have collapsed.
“Regular fogging measures are essential. It is better that the canal is closed so that mosquito menace is eradicated and the closed space be used,” suggested Sekar, a resident of Viduthalai Nagar.
