Action committee to chalk out future course of action
BERHAMPUR: Efforts are on to kindle the demand for a bench of the Orissa High Court for south Orissa.
Members of the Ganjam Bar Association launched four-day boycott of court on Thursday. They boycotted all courts in the city. The association has decided to boycott court for last four days of every month.
Some lawyers and social activists of the city took out a cycle rally from Berhampur to Chatrapur to build up support for the demand. Last month they had taken up a cycle rally to Digapahandi. This cycle rally was flagged off by the secretary of the Ganjam Bar Association, Rabindra Kumar Dev. The participants of this cycle rally included T.Venkat Rao, Prabhu Prasad Patra, Abani Gaya, Jagadananda Das and former secretary of the Ganjam bar Association, Manoj Patnaik. They were escorted by Tripato Prasad Sahu and Prabhudatta Acharya on bikes.
This team met the members and president of the Chatrapur Bar Association, Gokul Panda and held discussions to collect suggestions regarding the demand of High Court bench for south Orissa.
The secretary of the bar Association, Mr Dev said they would soon form an action committee to chalk out the detailed plans for the agitation to strengthen the demand for establishment of High Court bench. It may be noted that similar demand for High Court bench is also on in western Orissa.
The one-man judicial commission that had been formed to enquire into the feasibility of demands for High Court bench is yet to furnish its report even after more than one and half years. It may be noted that the members of the Ganjam Bar Association had taken up a long cease work agitation for the same demand from Dec 4, 2007. The agitation had continued for 139 days.
Rourkela: Functioning in local courts of western Orissa were hit for the second consecutive day today due to agitation by the lawyers to demand for setting up of a bench of Orissa High Court.
As per the schedule, the lawyers had been boycotting courts for the last three days of each month to demand a bench of Oriss High Court in western Orissa.
The lawyers under the banner of Western Orissa Bar Association had been agitating for the last several years to press for their demand.
The lawyers today obstructed the judges, revenue and other officials following which work in the offices had been affected at Sambalpur, the nerve centre of western Orissa. PTI
