PUDUCHERRY: Over 10 owners of vacant plots within the Oulgaret Municipality, including Annai Nagar, Kavikuyil Nagar, Moolakulam, Kadirkamam, West Brindavanam and Venkata Nagar, have been served showcause notices, following complaints from residents.

Vacant plots are a menace to residents of many areas as water and garbage accumulation there leads to sanitary problems and mosquito menace.

The number of vacant plots is high in Puducherry, especially within the Oulgaret Municipality.

Residents in many areas also complain about not being able to locate the owners as the plots often change hands.

Municipal Commissioner S. Rajamanickam said that these plots are generally acquired as assets so that they could be sold when the prices rise.

Notices have been served to those against whom specific complaints have been received by the municipality and whose contact addresses have been furnished by people living near the vacant plots.

“Most of these complaints were registered in December. The owners of these vacant plots have been given 30 days to respond to the notice. Some of them have asked for time to either clear their plots or begin construction, which has been granted,” he said, adding that if residents file complaints furnishing contact details of owners of vacant pltos, action would be taken.
