Kendrapara: Man-animal conflict has reached a flashpoint in and around Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary with fresh report of retaliatory killing of an estuarine crocodile. Residents living on the fringes of the sanctuary allegedly hacked to death a 17-foot-long adult male crocodile. With the latest croc casualty, two giant-size reptiles have met their tragic end following attack by locals.
“The body of giant-size croc has been spotted in a creek near Kalibhanjadiha-Talchua forest area. To ascertain cause of its death, we have sought the assistance of veterinary experts from State Animal Research Disease Research Institute,” Durga Charan Sahu, Forest Range Officer of the sanctuary, said on Thursday.
The reptile’s body, recovered on Tuesday with multiple injury marks, has been sent for post-mortem, said forest officials.
Forest officials believe that locals trapped the crocodile with the help of a fishing net. Later it might have been killed, sources said. PTI
