LUCKNOW: In a bid to protect cranes, the Uttar Pradesh government will soon prepare an action plan that involves awareness generation about the bird through films, websites and school curricula, official sources said here on Friday.

Besides these, special efforts would be made to protect wetlands which are the natural habitat of the cranes, Principal Secretary, Forests, V N Garg, who is also the president of the Crane Protection Committee, said here.

Help from officials of the irrigation, agriculture and fisheries departments will be sought for ensuring availability of water in these areas.

Emphasis will be laid on providing proper training to the officials in this regard, he said.

Garg said that about one-third of the cranes in the country resided in the wet lands of Etawah and Mainpuri districts of the State.

He said the state governemnt had sanctioned Rs 10 crore for protecting cranes in the area adding that a team of specialists would also be constituted for formulating the action plan. - PTI
