Lucknow: Panic gripped the communally- sensitive Mau town in east Uttar Pradesh after a low-intensity blast at a local madrasa.

The blast took place in Darul Uloom Madrasa in Sabzi Mandi area late on Wednesday night, police reports reaching here said. Though the cause of the explosion was still unclear, police have launched investigations to ascertain the reason.

Since Mau district has a history of communal clashes, a posse of police and PAC personnel were deployed in the area. With the festival of Navratra round the corner security has been beefed up in the district.

In October last year, Mau had witnessed a communal flare up which left at least seven people dead. Controversial Independent MLA Mukhtar Ansari and 32 others were last week discharged by a local court for their involvement in riots. UNI
