BERHAMPUR: The agitating tribals of marooned areas of Chitrakonda reservoir called off their ten-day agitation on Friday night.
A team of district officials led by the sub-collector of Malkangiri, M. S. Sorenga, Chitrakonda tehsildar D. Gopalkrishna had continued to hold discussions with the agitating tribals. Senior citizens and social activists, led by K. Sudhakar Patnaik, had also intervened to pacify the tribals.
The Malkangiri District Collector Nitin Bhanudas Jawale monitored the whole operation through regular contact with the tribals leaders and the officials through telephone. The Collector continued to hold meetings with officials of different departments at district headquarters regarding the fulfilment of demands of agitating tribals. The written assurances from the Collector were also read out aloud before the agitating tribals.
At around 9.30 pm on Friday night, the impasse was resolved. The tribals agreed to call off their agitation. Speaking to The Hindu, Mr Jawale said he has invited the representatives of cut-off villages to come over to district headquarters to hold direct discussions with officials of different departments regarding the fulfilment of their long-standing demands.
Mr Jawale was confident that the tribal leaders would come over to Malkangiri town in next few days to have direct meetings with officials.
