PUDUCHERRY: The Legislative Assembly on Thursday amended the Puducherry Value Added Tax Act, 2007 to give more powers to the Commercial Tax Department in tax collection and exclude and bring a few items under the purview of VAT.
Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam moved two Bills to amend the Act. An amendment has been made to Section 2 to give new definition to the word “branded” with a view to regulating the rate of tax by differentiating the product as branded and unbranded. More powers have been vested with the Commercial Tax Department to cancel permit in the event of a registered dealer evading tax. To facilitate collection of arrears, the barrier on account of pendency of appeal or revision has been removed.
To discourage taxpayers from belatedly remitting tax due to government, a penalty provision has been brought in.
