PUDUCHERRY: A three-day celebration will be held from August 21 to 23 to mark the 350th anniversary of the Foreign Mission Society, a French-based society consisting of missionaries who have travelled across the globe including several Asian countries.
The society was started in 1658 in France and its missionaries had set foot in Puducherry in 1776. Since then, as many as 331 missionaries of the society have come to Puducherry and were involved in many fields including education and medical, Director of Pastoral Centre Fr. S. Pitchaimuthu told reporters on Thursday.
On August 21, General Secretary of the society Fr. George Mansuy will inaugurate an exhibition on the origin, development and achievements of the society at the Uppalam ground of Petit Seminaire School at 9.30 a.m.
A seminar for the religious and lay persons will be held at 9.30 a.m. on August 22. A sound and light programme about the society will be staged by the Pondicherry Pastoral Centre at 6.30 p.m. A felicitation programme will be held on August 23. Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam will participate, besides dignitaries of the society from France, he added.
