BERHAMPUR: Festivities are on at full swing at all major churches of the city for the special midnight prayers for Christmas.
At these churches Christmas masses in Oriya as well as English would be organised. At the Oriya Baptist church of the city, which was established in 1838, the celebrations started almost a week ahead of the Christmas. A special art exhibition based on birth and life of Jesus is the high light of the celebrations this year.
Handmade Christmas cards, Special sweets, decorative cakes and decorative items find place in this exhibition. A sand art depicting the three wise men of the east who reached Bethlehem to honour new born Jesus is also part of the art exhibition. A play on life of Jesus was performed at the stage near the Church by the staff of the local Christian hospital. According to the members of the Church committee, the celebrations would continue at the Church till new years’ day.
The other major churches of the city like the 169 year old St. Stephens Church, Queen’s Mission Cathedral, and Telugu Baptist Church also adorn well decorated bridal look for the Christmas celebrations. The members of the youth choir of the St. Stephens’ Church would take out a ‘Nagar Kirtan’ singing bhajans in praise of Lord Jesus accompanied by traditional instruments like mridang and cymbals during midnight. The devotees have started trickling in to take part in the festivities that would precede the midnight mass at the Queen’s Mission Cathedral.
A play on life of Mother Mary was performed at the Telugu Baptist church of the city.
