BHUBANESWAR: Demand for according Central university status to Utkal University gained momentum as the Orissa’s premier institute for higher education celebrated its 65th foundation day here on Tuesday.
University Students Union submitted a memorandum seeking central university status for the institute to Governor and Chancellor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare.
"The Utkal University is a natural contender to be recognised as a central university. Given its glorious past and contribution of manpower towards development of state, attempts should be made for its immediate makeover," students leaders said.
Mr. Bhandare assured the gathering saying he would pursue the matter with Ministry of Human Resource Development to make it a central university.
The demand was the main issue in this year’s students’ union poll.
Earlier, the foundation day celebration got off to a colourful start with Mr. Bhandare riding on chariot driven by horse from the entrance of Vani Vihar to Auditorium.
"The gap between industry and corporate sector requirement and response of the university is increasing in view of present day challenge. Therefore the need of the hour is to respond the challenge.
There should be serious efforts to create quality manpower," he said. Railway Board Chairman K. C Jena and Utkal University Vice Chancellor L. N Mishra addressed the gathering. Students also demanded opening of a railway counter on the campus, which got a positive nod from the Railway Board Chairman.
