BERHAMPUR: The members of the class III employees’ union of the BSNL held token hunger strike in front of the office of the General Manager (GM) of Berhampur Telecom District in the city on Wednesday.

Similar hunger strikes were also held at all the 17 telecom district headquarters in the Orissa telecom circle. This agitation was supported by the casual employees’ union of the BSNL.

The agitation by BSNL employees in the city was led by G.Areya, the genral secretary of Ganjam-Gajapti units of the union.

Mr Areya said apart from their own demands they had taken up the issue of allege exploitation of casual workers by the BSNL authorities as an issue.

The casual workers of the BSNL are yet to get proper daily wages and basic facilities.

The union demanded regularization of casual workers. The other demands of agitators included reintroduction of compassionate appointment of family mmebers of deceased employees, pay upgradation, time-bound promotion of nonexecutives and eradication of disparity in pay scales of employees of similar ranks etc.

They threatened to go on one-day national strike on Dec 12 if their demands are not fulfilled.
