DEHRA DUN: The Uttarakhand Cabinet has slashed the tenure of cooperative societies from five years to two years in a move to get ruling BJP leaders elected to these bodies. In the elections held about two years ago these societies were cornered by the Congress that lost power in the State earlier this year.

According to State Chief Secretary S.K. Das, the decision had been taken to ensure participation of a larger number of persons as cooperative functionaries by rotation.
