CUTTACK: The Baragarh district consumer court’s order of imposing a fine on a private hospital for negligence in treatment and "wrong" prescription of medicine to a patient was upheld by the Orissa state consumer disputes redressal commission here. The Baragarh district consumer forum in July 2000 had directed the Mission Hospital at Diptipur of the district to pay Rs 40,000 as damages and Rs 4800 as litigation cost to Padmini Pradhan who permanently lost her right eye for faulty treatment by the doctors of the hospital.

Taking up an appeal filed by the hospital director, the state consumer forum president Justice R K Patra and its member Subash Mahtab observed that there was a clear case of medical negligence on the part of the hospital.
