Puducherry: Councillors of Puducherry Municipality, led by their chairperson B. Sridevi, staged a demonstration on the municipal premises here on Tuesday. They were seen sporting black badges to protest against the non-devolution of administrative and financial powers to elected civic bodies.
The irony was that the demonstration coincided with the the first anniversary of the formation of the municipality. Ms. Sridevi later told The Hindu that it was a pity though the civic polls were held after a gap of 38 years in the Union Territory, the Government had not cared to devolve the administrative and financial powers to local bodies.
All welfare measures and schemes could only be implemented after getting the Local Administration Department approval, which was a sad commentary on the democratically elected civic bodies. She said that despite several representations made to the Government, nothing had happened so far.
The chairperson was also sidelined in in preparing invitations and listing of names of participants to any functions, she alleged.
