BERHAMPUR: The State government suspended five doctors on Saturday for negligence of duty in relation to the violence at Patrapur on Thursday due to non-availability of doctors.
These suspended doctors include four who had been posted to the Patrapur Community Health Centre but did not join duty. They are Chandrasekhar Das, who had been posted as medical officer in charge of the CHC, paediatrician Dr Rashmi Patnaik, gynecologist Namita Sethi, and medicine specialist R.K. Mohaptra. Along with them Ganesh Das, a doctor posted at City hospital who had been deputed to the Patrapur CHC due to lack of physicians there was also suspended. He was not present on duty on Thursday when a youth injured by lightning was brought to the medical centre. Death of this youth without getting proper medical attention had sparked violence at Patrapur. Mrutyunjay Dyansamantra, the son of former speaker of State assembly and Congress leader, Chintamani Dyansamantra has been named as one of the prime accused in the FIRs filed in relation to the violence, arson and destruction.
According to Berhampur SP, three separate FIRs had been lodged. These FIRs have been lodged by the Patrapur tehsildar, local Block Development Officer (BDO), and the pharmacist of the Patrapur community health center (CHC) in relation to the violent incidents.
Two platoons of armed police are still deployed at Patrapur. Officials are trying to assess the losses caused by the violent mob.
According to sources efforts are on to run the Patrapur block office at the Chikiti block office till restoration work is complete. But the restoration work would take a long time as all records, equipments and furniture of the block office has got destroyed.
The former Speaker, Chintamani Dyansamantra has demanded a high-level enquiry into the situation that led to the violence at Patrapur. The Ganjam district unit of the CPI(M) has blamed the state government for the incident as the health center did not have doctors posted although it is only medical help available fro people at the Patrapur block.
