CUTTACK: The vigilance special judge of Berhampur on Wednesday convicted Nilakantha Mishra, a former school inspector of Koraput district, of demanding and accepting bribe. Mishra, while serving as school inspector of Kusuni education circle of the district in 1988, had demanded illegal gratification of Rs 1000 from one primary school teacher. Ekamba primary school teacher Mohan Nayak was asked to pay the amount to drop departmental proceedings against him. A case was registered against Mishra and after completion of investigation chargesheet was filed against him in December 2000.
The vigilance judge held Mishra guilty of the charges and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for one year and pay a fine of Rs 2000. In default of payment of fine, he would undergo RI for another six months, the court said.
