BHUBANESWAR: The site selection for Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar in over. The new IIT will come up at Aragul near Jatni over an area of 891 acres.

A four-member team headed by a top official of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development completed the process of site selection for establishment of IIT, Bhubaneswar, on Thursday.

The team was headed by Ashok Thakur, Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Director of IIT Kharagur Damodar Acharya, former Director of IIT Mumbai A.K. Dey, and Secretary of All-India Council for Technical Education K. Narayan Rao were in the team.

Team visits four sites

The team members visited four sites that were offered by the State government at Banki, Mundali, Dayabandha and Aragul near Jatni on Wednesday and Thursday.

Talking to presspersons at the State Secretariat, Mr. Thakur said that they found the site at Aragul most suitable for the new IIT.

Four km. from Jatni

Aragul is just four km away from Jatni railway station and 12 km from the Biju Patnaik Airport.

Several other institutes of higher education such as the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) and IT parks are also coming in the area.

The classes of IIT Bhubaneswar are now being conducted at IIT Kharagpur which is the mentor IIT for the upcoming institution.

Measures initiated

IIT Kharagpur has already initiated measures to start running the classes of IIT Bhubaneswar at its Bhubaneswar Centre from the next academic session.

The Centre will continue as the temporary campus of IIT Bhubaneswar till its own campus comes up at Aragul.
